History

Texas is the second-largest state in the United States in terms of area and population. It shares boundaries with Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, and the country of Mexico. Though its reputation as a desert state persists, just 10% of Texas is covered by sand. 90% of the state comprises different landscapes such as coastlines, grasslands, forests, swamplands, prairies, piney woods, rolling hills, and mountains. Texas has had six different entities or nations as rulers throughout its rich history, which is why “six flags above Texas” is an often-used historical term. The six flags are those of Spain, France, Mexico, Texas as a republic, the Union, and the Confederacy. The name “Texas” is derived from a Caddo tribal language phrase that means “friend.”

Major cities

Austin

Austin is both the state capital of Texas and the county seat of Travis County. Austin is the second most populous state capital after Phoenix, Arizona, and is partially located within both Hays County and Williamson County. Austin, Texas, has an estimated population of 950,715 and a population density of 3,182 persons per square mile, making it the most populous and rapidly expanding city in the United States.

Austin lies in Central Texas and is part of the Greater Texas Hill Country. That puts Austin close to the Colorado River, Lady Bird Lake, Lake Travis, and Lake Walter E. Long, to name a few.

Austin began being settled by pioneers in the 1830s and shortly after that was chosen to replace Houston as the then Republic’s capital, then called “Waterloo.” Not long after, “Waterloo” was changed to “Austin” to honor Stephen F. Austin, “The Father of Texas” and Texas’s first Secretary of State.

Residents of this great city are called “Austinites” and are well-known for their socio-economically, culturally, and professionally diverse mix. This diversity has bred a funky reputation for the city of Austin, so much so that the unofficial slogan of Austin is “Keep Austin Weird.”

San Antonio

San Antonio is the state’s second-most populous city and oldest municipality, giving it great historical value. San Antonio has a population of about 1.5 million and is the seventh most populated city in the United States.

The city was first built as a Spanish mission and outpost in 1718. In 1731, it was given a charter as a civil settlement, making it the oldest city in the state of Texas. While historically noteworthy, San Antonio has also recently built a name for itself, with tremendous expansion over the last three decades.

The city is located on one of the “Texas Triangle” corners, which connects Central and South Texas. San Antonio is the county capital of Bexar, but parts of the city are also located in Medina, Garden Ridge, and Comal counties.

It’s no surprise that San Antonio is known as “Military City, USA”; it is home to many military facilities, including Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, and Randolph Air Force Base. Given its past, it is not surprising that San Antonio is home to several historical sites, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Alamo and the San Antonio Missions Historical Park.

San Antonio’s recent growth has resulted in it being the headquarters for several Fortune 500 corporations and the sole practicing medical research facility in South Texas.

City Nickname(s): “S.A., River City, Alamo City, Military City USA, The 210”

City Motto: “Libertatis cunabula (Latin, Cradle of liberty).”
